After ascending to her super form and gaining the Mercury Harp, Ami decides that, if she’s going to be saddled with a frickin’ musical instrument for a weapon, at least she can learn how to use the harp out of battle. Besides which, it makes her feel closer to Michiru (her mentor) and her father (her artistic inspiration). Ami isn’t a prodigy by any means but, like with anything else she takes on, she works at it and puts her heart into her music—which makes up for her mistakes. Besides which, if she’s going to live for centuries, she has plenty of time to practice!

After seeing a post on “Ami’s” tumblr about quicksilver…

I now imagine that despite not being interested in sports much, Ami is excellent at sprinting as well as jogging and likes to participate in marathons for cancer research & such.

“History” Lessons

Minako and CereCere become pretty close in the future and at some point Minako wants to introduce her to one of her favorite movies from the 20th century, Titanic. At first Ami is completely against this because, let’s face it, CereCere doesn’t pay that much attention in history class and James Cameron’s Titanic isn’t particularly accurate. However, after CereCere sees and falls completely in love with the movie she reads A Night to Remember by Walter Lord and she cries every bit as much about the romance of Isidor and Ida Straus as she did about Jack and Rose.

Inspired by this, Ami has taken the opportunity to use fictional romances (such as Gone With the Wind) to encourage her to study real history. This has also helped Minako to learn as CereCere always goes to Minako to gush over the romance of the real events. Which also serves to keep Ami from having to listen to a teenaged girl swoon and giggle for several hours.

Of course, none of this stops Minako and CereCere from singing My Heart Will Go On as a duet every time the girls at the palace do karaoke.

If the soldiers’ hair isn’t natural or an artistic convention, Ami and Michiru both dye. Of the soldiers, they’re the only two whose hair can’t be explained away. Usagi, Makoto, Minako, and Haruka could be partly of European descent, and there are light-haired Japanese people anyway. Rei and Hotaru both have black hair with purple highlights, and some black hair can appear to have blue or purple in it. I believe Setsuna has the same colored hair as she did in the past due to her wonky history and rebirth; she just tells people that she dyes. ChibiUsa’s hair is even commented on in the canon, so it’s possible that the Ginzuishou or her parentage caused her hair color.

For Ami, dying is a way to safely rebel against the constraints of her life and goals. As well, blue fits her so well that most people don’t even notice it. Her mother probably questioned Ami’s choice but figured that, of all the things her teenage daughter could do, dying her hair was fairly harmless. I think Ami has mid- to dark-brown hair naturally.

Michiru dyes her hair to further the “artistic bohemian” persona she cultivates for her adoring public. While she’s actually fairly high maintenance, she knows that she can reach a larger audience if she caters to all the various cliques of the art world—including the eccentric types. She began dying before she really hit it big, so a large part of her presence as a world-famous artist and violinist is wrapped up in her odd hair now. Since her hair is fairly light, I think she’s most likely a blond or a very light redhead naturally.

As I said in a previous headcanon, I believe that the soldiers’ hair will change to their aura colors naturally when Serenity ascends. Ami and Michiru will both be glad to have those dye jobs over. They’re bad for your hair!
